LUDHIANA: Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh on Wednesday appeared in a local court in connection with the defamation case filed by former revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia against him.

Sanjay, accompanied with a battery of lawyers, appeared in the court of judicial magistrate (first class) Jagjit Singh, who deferred the hearing to August 23.

Majithia had filed the case in January 2016, accusing Sanjay and other AAP leaders of defaming him by dragging his name in the drug racket.

Interacting with the media later, Sanjay said, “I still stand on my statement. Now, it is up to chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh how he curbs the drug menace, which was rampant during the previous government.”

He said that during its first 100 days, the Congress government has failed to fulfil any of the promises it made to people in the run-up to the assembly elections.

Commenting on the murder of a pastor in Ludhiana, the AAP leader said, “Announcing rewards of lakhs of rupees for information on criminals after a murder will not solve the problem. The government must improve law and order situation in the state.”

He added, “The law and order in the state has completely collapsed.”

“The crime rate has increased and police have proved to be inefficient. They had earlier failed to catch the culprits in the murder of Mata Chand Kaur as well.” he said. PATIALA: Three days after a group of Sikh hardliners clashed with Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda followers over holding of ‘naam charcha’ at Marauri village in Samana, ASI Mewa Singh has been suspended for ‘unprofessional conduct’. He was posted at Mavi Kalan police station that had jurisdiction over the area in which clash happened.

“The clash could have been prevented, had the ASI acted swiftly. He mishandled the situated and was late in reaching the spot,” said SSP S Bhoopati, adding, he did not even call for reinforcement. DIG, Patiala range, Sukhchain Singh Gill, has directed the SSP to get an investigation done by SP (investigation) Harwinder Singh Virk.

Meanwhile, Sikh radical organisations sought release of their members, police had detained on Sunday. Protesters claimed that a 14-year-old son of a member and a12-year-old were also detained.
