HC stays quota for economically backward castes in Haryana
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday stayed the Haryana government’s decision to provide reservation under economically backward persons belonging to general category to Jats and five other communities .
There is 10 per cent reservation to those belonging to economic weaker sections in the state.
The petitioner, Vikas, a Sonepat resident, had challenged the state government’s decision seeking to get it quashed. The government had issued instructions to deputy commissioners and other officers to issue economically backward persons (EBP) category certificates to eligible persons belonging to Bishnor, Jat, Jat Sikh, Ror, Tyagi and Muslim Jat/ Mulla Jat communities.
It was argued that as per the criteria for consideration as economically backward belong to the general category, it was specifically mentioned that the person who claims benefit of reservation under other categories would not be entitled for reservation in this category. The court was told that the fresh instructions by the government were in violation of the law enacted. Hence, be set aside.
The high court while staying the decision of government has sought response by September 14.
