ASI HELD FOR ACCEPTING BRIBE IN PHAGWARA

PHAGWARA: Jalandhar vigilance bureau (VB) team arrested an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Jagtar Singh from Phagwara police station for accepting bribe of ₹3,000 from a local resident here on Saturday. The accused ASI was posted at Sadar police station. Complainan­t Gagan Kumar said, “I had borrowed ₹50, 000 from a city-based financier. On Friday, his workers hit me as I failed to return the money.”

Kumar said that he had filed a complaint against the financer at Sadar police station. He visited the police station on Saturday, when the accused demanded ₹3,000 bribe to arrest the financier.

A team led by deputy superinten­dent of police (DSP vigilance) Manjit Singh nabbed the ASI while accepting bribe. The DSP said, “We will investigat­e his property records. A case has been registered under Sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act against him.” SBSNAGAR: The city police said that they have arrested a bike thief with the help of CCTV (closed circuit television) cameras and seized nine stolen bikes from his possession.

The accused is Gurjeet Pal, 30, of Koom Kalan village in Ludhiana. Station house officer (SHO) Raj Kumar said, “On August 10, Ajay Kumar of Kulam Road, said that his TVS bike was stolen by an unidentifi­ed thief from outside Kumar Bakery near Chandigarh Chowk.”

The CCTV cameras installed near the area had captured the crime. “On the basis of the footages, we identified Gurjeet and arrested him,” he said. Police team seized nine stolen bikes.

The accused will be produced in the court on Sunday.

A case under different Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused.
