Live-in against our culture, says Raj women’s panel chief
ALWAR: The Rajasthan State Women’s Commission will launch a campaign against live-in relation as it is “against our culture”, its chairperson Suman Sharma said Sunday.
“It is the women who suffer most when such a relationship ends. There is no provision to help such women because live-in relations are against our culture,” Sharma told reporters in Alwar.
The commission may be the first such state body in the country to take up a campaign to advise women against getting into a live-in relation.
Sharma said the commission will also form a five-member committee of experts that will take up counselling of brides and grooms before they tie the knot. This will be done to ensure the couple have a peaceful married life and that the marriage lasts, she said.
Sharma said that when she took charge as the chairperson of the women’s commission, 32,000 cases were pending for disposal. The backlog has been brought down to 5,000, she claimed.
The commission will soon form zila manch (district forum) in every city on the lines of Gujarat model. “The aggrieved women can lodge a complaint at the zila manch instead of rushing to Jaipur. Similarly, mahila panchayats will be formed at village level to help solve problems faced by women. Such panchayats will comprise the village sarpanch, two panch, gram sewak and an auxiliary nursing midwife (ANM),” she added.
Sharma said that commission has many success stories to tell and urged parents not to interfere much in newly married couples’ lives as it such interference is one of the major reasons behind disputes after marriage.
