Golden chapter in the history of 36 Sikh Platoon to be unfolded
AMRITSAR: The Saragarhi Sarai, a luxurious inn for pilgrims, which was inaugurated in April, is all set to inaugurate a special gallery dedicated to the Sikh martyrs, who lost their lives in the Saragarhi battle in 1897.
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Kirpal Singh Badungar will inaugurate the gallery on Sunday.The gallery will have on display the paintings showing the martyrs while at war.
At the centre of the reception area of the gallery, there is a symbolic model, a pictorial representation of the battle of Saragarhi. The model goes on to depict the directions from where the attack came and the valour displayed by the Sikh martyrs in defence.
“My team met the descendants of these Sikh soldiers to match their physical appearances to get close to what the soldiers must have looked like,” shared historian Gurinder Singh Joshan, who is also the chairman of the Saragarhi foundation.
Once opened, the gallery will show paintings of each soldier as well as a symbolic model representing the battle.
Twenty-one Sikh martyrs had sacrificed their lives in the Saragarhi battle.
The history which will unfold in the gallery through paintings, narrates the saga of Sikh soldiers of 36 Sikh Platoon, who attained martyrdom while at war with ten thousand Afghans.
The story of Saragarhi Sikh martyrs is still a part of school curriculum in countries like France, Italy, Japan and United Kingdom.
