FAMILY SEEKS ₹1 CR EXGRATIA, GOVT JOB AND ALL COPS AT RAMGANJ SUSPENDED

JAIPUR: Curfew clamped in four police station areas of the Walled city following the death of one person in clashes between police and protestors in Ramganj area Friday night, continued for the second consecutive day Sunday. Mobile internet services also remained suspended.

Officials were, however, still trying to convince the family of Mohammad Raees alias Aadil, who was killed allegedly in police firing, to get the post-mortem done and accept the body.

Raees, a second year student of BA, was killed when the forces opened fire to control a mob that had went berserk following an incident of an alleged assault of a couple by a constable in the area.

“The situation on Sunday was peaceful and there were no untoward incidents. The decision to extend the curfew will depend on the outcome of ongoing talks with the family of the deceased person,” said additional commissioner of police, law and order, Nitin Deep Blaggan.

Raees’ family has refused to allow the postmortem of the body demanding a compensation of ₹1 crore, government job and action against all the policemen at the Ramganj police station. “We demand that the government suspend the entire staff of Ramganj police station,” his elder brother Mohammad Jameel has said.

Meanwhile, along with the police, battalions of the quick response team (QRT) and emergency response team (ERT) remained stationed at the Manak Chowk, Ramganj, Subhash Chowk and Galta Gate areas.

The dispute on Friday night had started when the police were driving away carts and street vendors and accidentally hit a couple, who were passing by the area on a bike, with a baton.

It resulted in an altercation between locals and the police following which a mob reached Ramganj police station and started pelting it with stones.

To rein in the mob, police resorted to lathi-charge and alleged firing, which led to Raees’ death.

“We are facing problems in accessing basic amenities because of the curfew. Our daily routine has been jeopardised with even the supply of milk being affected owing to the security vigil,” said Karan Pandey, a resident of the Walled City.

Family members of Raees told HT that till now talks with the administration have remained inconclusive.

“We won’t allow the postmortem of the body to be done unless our demands are met,” said Wasim, relative of the deceased.
