ROHTAK: Admitting lapses for the first time since a newborn boy went missing from the hospital on Sunday, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak, on Wednesday suspended a staff nurse and terminated the services of seven Class-4 employees who were posted in the gynaecology ward when the incident took place.

The seven terminated employees included sweepers, security guards and housekeeping employees of the hospital. Taking action on the basis of a report submitted by a four-member internal committee, the hospital also issued a show-cause notice to the head of department of obstetrics and gynaecology ward.

Rohtak’s Dairy Mohalla resident Sunny Kumar’s wife Ranju had given birth to a baby boy at PGIMS on Sunday afternoon. Few minutes later, the celebrations for the family turned into a nightmare as hospital authorities informed them their newborn had gone missing.

While the family is already holding a dharna outside the gynaecology ward, parallel protests erupted at PGIMS on Wednesday as staff nurses and Class-4 employees marched to the vice-chancellor’s office demanding revocation of action against their colleagues. “Why selective action? We are not going to tolerate this. Why no doctor is being suspended. Are we the easy targets?” said Parmod, a Class-4 employee. The staff nurses and Class-4 employees threatened to suspend work until the action against their colleagues was not revoked.
