Hindu group wants sale of meat halted during Navratras
GURGAON: The Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Kranti Dal has written to the deputy commissioner, Vinay Pratap Singh, and Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) officials, urging them to suspend the sale of meat during the Navratri festival.
In its letter to the DC, a copy of which is in possession of Hindustan Times, the organisation has stated that meat is being openly sold across the city and they want the DC to intervene and stop its sale during the Navratri period as it is ‘offensive to Hindu beliefs’. The organisation also warned that inaction will lead to a largescale protest, similar to the one they conducted last year against meat sale during Navratri.
The organisation’s threats had led to the cancellation of Pakistani singer Atif Aslam’s concert last year.
“We have got assurances from DC and MCG that they will look into the matter. If they fail to carry out any action, then we will individually visit the shop owners and request them to stop selling meat. The action will be taken in a peaceful manner,” Yogesh Hindustani, Haryana state president of Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Kranti Dal, said.
The DC could not be reached for comment. “We cannot stop the sale of products on sentimental value. Meat sale is a livelihood for many and we wouldn’t be able to forbid shopkeepers from selling. Instead, we will write to the Gurgaon police to give them cover,” a senior MCG official said.
