27-year-old intervenes in fight over parking, stabbed to death
MANY CAMERAS IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD WERE NOT FUNCTIONAL
NEWDELHI:A 27-year-old man was stabbed to death and his friend severely injured after the duo intervened in a quarrel over parking space outside an eatery in east Delhi’s Geeta Colony on Saturday night.
Though the murder happened in front of several people in a neighbourhood populated with dhabas, the killers managed to flee and remained unidentified till Sunday night.
The murdered man, Nishant Arora, lived with his parents and sister in east Delhi’s Rashid Market. He worked as a surveyor with an insurance firm that has its office in V3S Mall in east Delhi.
On Saturday night, Arora and his friends, Ashish Tyagi and Gaurav Sharma, decided to have dinner at the Chaman Dhaba in Geeta Colony. Riding on a scooter, the three friends set out for the eatery.
The trio had barely entered the dhaba around 11.45pm when they heard a bunch of men quarrelling outside. On checking, they found a group of four-five youths picking a fight with a man driving a car.
“The youths had arrived on two motorcycles and were fighting with the car owner over parking space outside the dhaba. While most people watched the quarrel from a distance, Arora and his friends decided to intervene,” said a man.
However, the motorcycleborne youths did not take kindly to the intervention and soon shifted their attention from the car owner to the trio. Within moments, the quarrel apparently turned into a scuffle.
“Before the victims could realise what was happening, one of the men pulled out a knife and attacked the trio. Gaurav was the first to be attacked, suffering stab wounds in his stomach, thigh and chin. When Nishant tried to save his friend, he too was stabbed,” said Nupur Prasad, DCP (Shahdara).
Their third friend, Ashish, managed to escape unhurt, as the men fled. Nishant’s brotherin-law, Puneet, alleged that most people present at the scene did nothing to stop the attack.
But someone from the public later hailed an auto in which the two injured men rushed to Hedgewar Hospital. Doctors there declared that Nishant had been brought dead. Nishant probably died from a stab wound to his heart.
Gaurav, meanwhile, was referred to GTB Hospital where he underwent a surgery on Sunday morning and was stable, said police. The police have registered a murder case and formed a special team to identify and nab the killers.
On Sunday, the team tried to seek CCTV footage of the incident, but were unsuccessful. Many of the cameras in the neighbourhood were not working. Most of those installed outside dhabas had not captured the crime or the killers.
