Garry last caught on Delhi-jaipur toll plaza security cam

AMRITSAR:ADDING to clues in the case of kidnapping of an assistant professor from Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) here, closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the accused seen alone while crossing the Delhijaipur toll plaza has emerged, and led to more theories, including that she may have been killed.

The footage is from Sunday late evening, said sources who shared details.

The kidnapping dates back to September 11, that is, last Monday, when the Hindi professor, 32-year-old Sukhpreet Kaur of Baghapurana in Moga district, had gone to meet the man — Jazzinder Singh Virk, alias Garry, 30, of Kharar in Mohali — at a restaurant near the campus over some money he allegedly owed her.

The kidnapping was reported by the family on Friday and they also received a ransom message for Rs 3 lakh from the kidnapper who used her phone, police have said. He later raised the demand to Rs 30 lakh.

In the latest CCTV footage from the toll plaza, only the front seats are seen and Garry is driving alone in a Honda City sedan with the number plate reading CH-03-K-0012 .

“Only the front seats were captured in the cameras. The woman is seen nowhere. The only hope is that she was in the back seat, but the possibility of her having met the extreme fate cannot be ruled out,” a police official who is part of the probe said on the condition of anonymity. “Police teams have been divided as the accused could have fled to Jaipur, Mumbai, or somewhere in another nearby state, after crossing the toll plaza.”

POLICE QUESTION HIS FIANCEE, HER PARENTS

Sources said that accused, who deals in the share market, is engaged to be married to a woman in Rupnagar.

“The police there have already questioned that woman and her parents, while the Mohali police have questioned his father who retired as a driver from the Punjab governor house. This has led to other

theories. There is a possibility of a ‘staged’ kidnapping too,” said the police officer.

Police also said that though the accused kept his phone switched off, he used the woman’s phone right until September 15 though he didn’t keep it on continuously.

THE LETTER TWIST Already, the case had taken a new turn on Saturday when the police found a letter from Sukhpreet’s hostel room on the university campus in which she said she was going to meet Garry at Chocolate Room or Subway, both eating joints, located in the market opposite the university.

They eventually met at the Chocolate Room.

She also mentioned Garry’s address, phone number and names of his parents, saying that he borrowed money from her and she was going to collect the amount. She wrote that Garry would be responsible if anything happened to her.

An alumnus of the elite Lawrence School, Sanawar, in Himachal Pradesh, Garry was earlier booked in a case related to illicit drugs in Kharar.

SAME DIFFERENCE

While in 2014 Bajwa as state chief failed to win Gurdaspur, now it is Jakhar as state chief being pitched by Amarinder and the majority of the seven Congress MLAS of Gurdaspur. Bajwa was reluctant in 2014 and so is Jakhar now, as he does not want to be seen as deserting his home turf for a shot at a seat which will see an election again in less than two years. Jakhar lost from Abohar this time after three consecutive wins. Also, Jakhar too had contested in 2014 upon the high command’s insistence, from Ferozepur LS seat, and lost.

Bajwa, after the 2014 loss, had to also lose his state presidency to Amarinder, and Jakhar was ousted as leader of the party’s legislature group in 2015. Bajwa won a nomination to the Rajya Sabha last year. Jakhar was resurrected as state party chief this year after Amarinder became CM.
