AMRITSAR: The death of accused Jazzinder Singh Virk, alias Garry, 30, who had allegedly kidnapped assistant professor Sukhpreet Kaur, 32, of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) from Amritsar on September 11, has shattered the local police’s hopes to trace the victim.

The accused’s death has left many questions unanswered in the kidnapping case of Sukhpreet, who belongs to Baghapurana in Moga district. The police was hoping to trace the victim, arrest him and solve the case. But Garry, of Kharar in Mohali, committed suicide in Amboli village of Maharashtra on Wednesday.

“We were hopeful of nabbing him in Maharashtra, but he committed suicide,” said a senior police official on condition of anonymity. “It is a blind case for us now. We are absolutely clueless about the whereabouts of the victim,” he added. The question that has put the police in a lurch is, why did the victim accompany the accused, with consent, if she suspected life threat.

The victim had left a letter in her women’s hostel room, in the campus, stating that she was going to meet Garry at a restaurant opposite to the varsity to take back some money that she had lent him. She mentioned the name, address and phone number of the accused and his family, and wrote that in case anything happens to her, Garry should be held responsible.

Police found a CCTV footage revealing that the victim willingly left from the restaurant with the accused, claim the police. Police is investigating whether victim knew the accused well, and why she left the note suspecting harm from Garry. Police is suspecting that the accused might have killed the victim and then committed suicide.

They are yet to trace Sukhpreet, who was last seen at Dhilwan in Kapurthala district. And was later not seen in the front seats of Garry’s car in the footages captured in CCTV cameras installed at highway toll plazas of Jaipur and Vadodara.

“Our teams are looking for the victim. The Maharashtra Police have initiated inquest proceedings there after recovery of Virk’s body,” said ADCP Lakhbir Singh.

GARRY STAYED AT RUPNAGAR AS WELL RUPNAGAR: Jazzinder had been staying at the house of his fiancée at Nuhon Colony near here till Friday. Amritsar police traced his location though he managed to escape. Rupnagar SSP Raj Bachan Singh Sandhu said Garry was engaged with a girl from Rupnagar and reached her home on September 12. Though Sandhu said the family has not lodged any complaint sources said that Jazzinder fleeced them of ₹8 lakh.
