REFUSING REFUGE TO ROHINGYAS
Apropos the HT editorial on September 21, ‘The refugees nobody wants’, it is difficult to believe that India, known for treating guests as gods, is refusing refuge to a few thousand persecuted Rohingyas. We had opened our doors to millions of Bangladeshis and Tibetans, but the hostility towards Rohingyas negates Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s idea of empathy with Muslims. India seems to be trying to be seen on the right side of the Myanmar junta. Myanmar state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi has shown insensitivity toward the plight of the community. She has failed to quell an international outcry in her recent nationwide address. UN human rights investigators should be allowed unfettered access to Myanmar. By this gesture, Suu Kyi may be able to redeem her reputation of being a humanist.
P Lal Singh solve the domestic problem with sympathy and compassion, as she is a world icon. Any terrorist element in the community should be dealt with sternly.
