GURDASPUR:EVADING arrest after a rape case was filed by a Punjab Police woman constable on September 29, former Akali Dal minister Sucha Singh Langah on Wednesday surrendered in a Gurdaspur court. He was remanded in police custody till October 9.

Before appearing in the court of chief judicial magistrate Mohit Bansal at 2 pm, Langah told the media he had surrendered and he will come out clean. “Court wich doodh da doodh, paani da paani ho jayega (the truth will prevail),” he said.

Once an Akali strongman of Gurdaspur, Langah was only accompanied by his son Sukhjinder Singh alias Sonu, two Chandigarh and three local lawyers.

While being taken out, he faced angry slogans of members of Satkar committee who called him “balatkari” (rapist) while brandishing swords. Committee’s local president Balbir Singh Mushal also attacked the vehicle in which Langah was sitting surrounded by cops. The police remained mute spectators through all this though no one was hurt in the attack.

The radical group also burnt his effigy.

“He should have surrendered before. There was no ambiguity about the guilt of Langah. The silence of SAD chief Sukhbir Badal says it all. Even he (Sukhbir) is not calling it political vendetta,” Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar said.

The SAD, on its part, said the party had already made it clear that no support will be extended to Langah. “He has been expelled and will have to defend himself,” SAD leader Daljit Cheema said.

Langah’s lawyers pleaded in the court that there was an old financial dispute between Langah and the complainant and his political opponents had turned into a rape case.
