Nearly eight lakh university teachers to get a salary hike

NEW DELHI: Ahead of the festive season, there is some good news for the nearly 8,00,000 teachers and staff working in colleges, universiti­es and institutio­ns run by the Centre and state government­s.

The Union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved a major pay hike, which will result in their salary increasing in the range of 22%-28%.

The pay revision is based on the recommenda­tions of the 7th Pay Commission.

HT had on July 10 reported that the hike will be in this range.

The approved pay scales would be applicable from January 1, 2016. The annual central financial liability on account of this measure would be about ₹9,800 crore.

With the pay revision, an assistant professor’s entry pay would jump by ₹10,396 with a grade pay of ₹6,000 while that of an associate professor will rise by ₹24,000.
