₹115-crore cancer institute to come up in Amritsar

AMRITSAR: Punjab health minister Brahm Mohindra laid the foundation stone of a state cancer institute on the premises of Government Medical College in Amritsar on Thursday.

He said the estimated cost of the institute constructi­on will be ₹115 crore. “It will be a 150-bedded complex with world-class treatment facilities and state-of-theart equipment,” Mohindra said, adding that the process to open five new medical colleges in Punjab has been initiated.

He said the foundation stone of one such medical college will be laid soon in Mohali.

“It will be after a gap of nearly 60 years that a new government medical college will be opened in the state,” the minister said while addressing a gathering of doctors and students. He also announced a grant of ₹70 crore for the upliftment of Amritsar medical college and inaugurate­d the administra­tive block besides the auditorium of the Guru Nanak Dev hospital.

The health minister said that the vacant posts of the professors in medical colleges will be filled soon.

The attackers, identified as Ranjit Rana, Kamaljit Singh and Sunil Kumar, had been facing trials in the cases of murder and culpable homicide. Jail superinten­dent Vikramjit Singh Panthey said, “The accused had some old issue with Sukhdev who came here recently. Our staff intervened and prevented the situation from turning ugly.” A complaint in this regard has been registered against the accused.
