GURGAON: The Cyber Crime Unit of Gurgaon arrested a man for allegedly posing as an employee of Paytm and duping people into revealing details of their digital wallets and bank accounts. He targeted e-wallet users by searching their complaints on Google, the police said.

The accused, Mohit Mishra (18), is currently in police remand for six days after he was produced in the court on Tuesday. Mishra, a resident of Assam, was arrested on Monday. According to the police, Mishra used to call Paytm customers and get their details over the phone, following which the accused used to shop using their wallet details.

The accused was traced after a woman in 2016 had complained to the police that ₹15,623 from her bank account was used for shopping by the impostor. A complaint was lodged at Sadar police station and transferred to the cyber crime unit. Officials said that they nabbed Mishra, based on a tip-off. “He might be involved in more frauds. Further investigation is going on. The accused

used to search Google for complaints about Paytm by users. The accused said that he used to contact the complainants over the phone as most of them posted their phone numbers along with their complaints,” Pankaj Kumar, an officer with the Cyber Crime Unit of Gurgaon, said.

Incidents of online fraud in the city have been on the rise. According to police records, 2,270 cases of cyber crime were registered in 2016, which is a 15% increase from 1,923 such cases registered in 2015. This year, 1,260 cases have been registered so far.
