Preet Didbal becomes first Sikh woman mayor in US

-

NEW YORK: Preet Didbal has been elected mayor of Yuba City in California, becoming the first Sikh woman to hold the position in the United States.

Dibal was appointed by the California City Council and will be sworn in on December 5, KCRA-TV, an Nbc-affiliated television station, reported.

There are other Sikh mayors across the country with Ravi Bhalla elected earlier this month as mayor in Hoboken, New Jersey.

However, Didbal is the first Sikh woman to be elected mayor in the country. Didbal was elected to Yuba City Council in 2014 and is the vice-mayor at present. She is the first in her family to graduate from college.

“I am honoured and humbled to serve our community. I truly thank you for your support. May God continue to guide us to that which provides peace and gratitude,” Preet posted on her Facebook page after her election on November 9.

“Seeing someone that looks like you, that comes from the same faith as you, to be elected in a public office in this country is inspiring. And it’s definitely moving,” Jaydeep Singh with the Sikh Coalition said.

“When Ravi Bhalla was elected in New Jersey, that was the first time I saw someone who looked like me, who was in a public office in the United States of America,” he said.

The Sutter-yuba region is home to one of the largest Sikh communities in the country.

On November 8, Bhalla became the first ever Sikh mayor of New Jersey’s Hoboken city after stiff competition that turned ugly when he was labelled a terrorist in slanderous fliers.

The Sikh Coalition estimates five lakh people who follow the Sikh faith live in the United States. NABHA : In the second death of a Punjabi man in the US over the past week, Hardeep Singh Tiwana, 30, of Dittupur Jattan village, 24 km from Nabha, was killed in a shooting at Cambridge Apartment Complex in southwest Bakersfield in the state of California, last Friday.

Tiwana’s body was found with a gunshot in the head. He worked as truck driver and had been in the US for the past eight years. US media reports suggest that Bakersfield Police have no clue about the murderer and have appealed the residents to contact them with any information related to shooting.

Earlier this week, a 21-yearold, Sandeep Singh, jalandhar was shot dead, purportedly by robbers, in Jackson city, Mississippi state on Tuesday, local time. Sandeep was of New Defence Colony in Jalandhar. At Tiwana’s village, his house was found locked with his father Manmohan Singh, 60, and mother Paramjit Kaur away to Kaur’s parents’ house. On Wednesday, Paramjit Kaur passed away of illness, said sarpanch Manpreet Singh. “We heard the news about the murder of Hardeep Singh through social media. It was later confirmed from online media reports,” Manpreet said, adding Manmohan was now left alone. He had not been told about his eldest son’s death as he was still in shock after his wife’s demise. Malkit Kaur, aunt of Tiwana, appealed to the Centre to help bring his body to the village.
