REGAR SAID HE KILLED MOHAMMED AFRAZUL TO TAKE REVENGE FROM HIM FOR LURING A GIRL OF HIS COMMUNITY TO WEST BENGAL

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan police arrested 38-year-old Shambhu Lal Regar on Thursday on the charges of hacking a West Bengal man to death and later burning the body by pouring petrol over it on Wednesday afternoon in Rajsamand district. Police said the man will be produced in court on Friday.

Regar told reporters after his arrest that he killed Mohammed Afrazul to take revenge from him for luring a girl of the (Regar) community to West Bengal a year ago. Regar said he brought the girl back from Bengal. Police did not reveal any details about that.

Earlier, some video clips of Regar hacking Afrazul with an axe and machete and later burning the body circulated on Whatsapp. HT could not verify the authenticity of the videos.

Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje called the act deplorable and said, “I have directed police to prosecute the criminal in the shortest possible time.” She added that the crime needed to be condemned in strongest possible terms.

Home minister Gulab Chand Kataria ordered a special investigative team (SIT) to probe the case. He added that internet services had been suspended in the district to maintain law and order. Rajasthan director general of police (DGP) OP Galhotra said the victim’s brother Roop informed police about finding the charred body of his brother in Rajnagar on a dirt road off the main road near Dev Heritage Hotel. The DGP said police team from Rajnagar police station went with him to the spot and brought the body to mortuary.

The victim’s brother told police that Afrazul and he lived in a rented accommodation in Kankroli for around 12 years. They worked in brick kilns and on construction sites.

Galhotra said Regar’s friends and family members had been rounded up for interrogation. Police said the man has three daughters. His parents live in Gujarat. He lives in Regar colony with his wife and daughters. Regar is unemployed for a year, the police said.

The police chief said considering the rarity of the crime, police will file the chargesheet soon so the prosecution can ask death for this premeditated murder.
