KARNAL: Three members of a family, including two women, were killed after their car collided with another car on National Highway 1 near Bastara toll plaza of Karnal district on Sunday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Gurdeep Singh Chawla, 55, his wife Gurmeet Kaur, 54, and his daughter Jaspreet Kaur, 30. Gurdeep’s son Amandeep and son-in law Kulwinder were critically injured and were admitted to a private hospital.

According to police, the three victims were residents of Subhash Nagar of Delhi and were going to Paonta Sahib to participate in a family function.

Tejinder Singh, nephew of the deceased, said that they were going in four cars to Poanta Sahib.

“There was some problem in one of the cars and we decided to take a U turn from the Bastara toll plaza. Suddenly a speeding Mercedes coming from the opposite direction hit the Honda City,” he said.

The Mercedes car driver, however, denied that he was speeding, instead alleging that the car of victims took a U-turn on the highway, leading to the accident.

Madhuban police station incharge Rajeev Kumar said police have registered a case under Section 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code against the driver of the Mercedes but no arrest has been made yet.

Kumar said that the bodies were handed over to the family members after post-mortem.
