UP cancer patient raped twice in 7 hrs

LUCKNOW: A 15-year-old-girl suffering from blood cancer was allegedly raped by her neighbour and his friend in Sarojinina­gar village on the city’s outskirts here on Saturday night.

After the ordeal, the girl was reportedly raped again, this time by a motorcycli­st, who assured her help after she was abandoned by the earlier rapists.

Additional superinten­dent of police (ASP), East, Sarvesh Mishra said the incident came to light when locals spotted the girl loitering alone on Saturday night and informed cops at the Bijnore police outpost. The girl then narrated the entire incident to the police, he added.

The police have arrested the motorcycli­st, Virendra Yadav of Banthra, after registerin­g an FIR under IPC section 376D of gang rape and section 5(G) and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, while the two other accused, identified as Shubham and Sumit, are still at large.

The girl told cops that Shubham and Sumit met her when she had gone to an eatery near her house in Sarojinina­gar at around 5 pm. She said they offered her a lift on their motorcycle but took her to a deserted place and raped her after holding her captive for about six hours.

She said the duo later dumped her by the roadside and threatened her with dire consequenc­es if she reported the matter to the police. Narrating further, the girl said that when she was waiting for help when Virendra stopped his motorcycle and promised to drop her home. On the way, she shared her ordeal with Yadav. “But he took her to a deserted spot and raped her. He fled leaving her at the spot,” police said.

The girl’s parents said she has been suffering from the life threatenin­g disease from the past four years. “

ASP Sarvesh Mishra said the girl was sent for medical examinatio­n and a social organisati­on was roped in for her counsellin­g to help her. He added the investigat­ing officer case has been directed to get the girl’s statement recorded before a magistrate. NEW DELHI: As the last date for withdrawin­g nomination­s for the post of Congress president goes by on Monday, the Congress may officially announce the election of Rahul Gandhi as the party’s new president.

Gandhi is the only contender for the post which has held by Sonia Gandhi since 1998.

While Gandhi will officially take over on December 16, he will designated as the president-elect in the interim period. He will be handed over a certificat­e, appointing him the party president, on December 16 in the presence of Sonia Gandhi and other senior leaders, the Congress’s central election authority chairman Mullapally Ramachandr­an said. Sonia Gandhi will officially hand over the mantle of the 132year-old party to her son around 11am after which Rahul Gandhi will meet leaders from across the country at the Congress’s headquarte­rs, party sources said.

Altogether, 89 nomination­s filed in Gandhi’s favour were found to be valid after scrutiny. The election committee will also formally announce on Monday that Gandhi won unopposed.
