PANCHKULA: Initially hesitating to pay compensation, rape convict dera sacha sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh deposited ₹30 lakh in a special CBI court that was imposed on him as a fine at the time of sentencing him in rape case on August 28.

The fine was deposited by Baba’s counsel on Friday evening in the shape of a bank draft which was deposited in the bank on Monday by the court here.

It will, however, not be immediately paid to the two victims who were awarded ₹14 lakh each as compensation from this amount.

While hearing his appeal against the trial court conviction in October, the Punjab and Haryana high court had observed that the amount deposited by Ram Rahim in the trial court will be converted into a fixed deposit (FDR) and disbursed to either party with interest, only after the verdict. During that hearing, Ram Rahim pleaded that he had no money to pay the fine. However, the high court stated that the amount had to be paid as per the trial court orders and set a two-month deadline as procedure prescribed under the law.

Ram Rahim is currently serving a 20-year-jail term inside Rohtak’s Sunaria jail. But litigations against him are from over. He is the main accused in two murder trials, which are in the final stages in the CBI court here. The Panchkula police recently questioned him in connection with the arson in Panchkula on August 25.
