Sangrur woman with ‘four husbands and a fiance’ falls into police net for serial cheating

SANGRUR : She was well on her way to personifyi­ng Ruskin Bond’s iconic tale, ‘Susanna’s Seven Husbands’, which was made popular by the Priyanka Chopra movie ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’. Closer home, Punjabi movie ‘RSVP: Ronde Sare Vyah Picho’ could well have been based on her, if the allegation­s are true.

Meet Paramjit Kaur of Gharachon village, Sangrur, who was arrested on Tuesday morning, a day after Pushpinder Dass, a resident of Loheakhera, her fiancé, filed a complaint. She allegedly promised Dass that she would take him abroad after marriage; but ditched him and took away money and gold from him, police said.

This was not her first time, says the FIR. She earlier got married four times, starting with Major Singh, then going on to Gurdev Singh, Jagir Singh and then Kartar Singh.

In her early 50s now, she got men interested via matrimonia­l advertisem­ents in vernacular newspapers in which she described herself as a 40-yearold with NRI connection­s. A man named Harwinder Singh alias Rimpy, from Sanghreri village of the district, was arrested too. He used to play an NRI from Canada in the con jobs, police said. Jagsir Singh played her nephew, Jagtar Singh alias Laddi turned her cousin, and Joti Kaur was shown as her sister. They remain to be arrested.

“She also targeted those men who were widowed and wanted to remarry. After marriage, she took money from her husband(s) on different pretexts, and left the house to never return,” said William Jejji, deputy superinten­dent of police, Sunam, under whose jurisdicti­on the area falls.

With Dass, her engagement took place on August 7, and the next day she allegedly took Rs 50, 000 from him by saying that her mother needed medical care. Later, she took 8 tola gold (80gm, worth Rs 2.4 lakh) and Rs 10 lakh from him with the assurance to take him abroad, police said. “At the time of her arrest, Rs 7 lakh and 7 tola gold were seized from her.”

“In July 2012, she married Jagir Singh, a resident of Amritsar. She fled with Rs 25 lakh from his house. She was also booked for cheating at Maqboolpur­a police station on July 30, 2012, ” the DSP added. Kartar Singh belonged to Kharar, and Gurdev Singh to Sangrur. Her first husband, who died, was Major Singh from her village.

She has been booked under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 506 (criminal intimidati­on) and 120B (conspiracy) at the Longowal police station.
