- HT Correspondent

BATALA : Perturbed over the alleged laxity of police in giving him justice, 30-year-old Mandeep Singh tried to commit suicide by setting himself ablaze in front of the SSP’S office here on Wednesday.

While he was pouring kerosene on himself, a policeman deputed outside the office noticed him and took him into custody.

The police also caught his brother Gurpreet Singh, who tried to intervene. On getting information, Dsp-city, Sucha Singh Bal reached the spot and ordered filing of a case under Section 186 (obstructing public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force)) of the IPC against Mandeep Singh and his brother Gurpreet Singh. Both are residents of Bodey De Khui village.

Mandeep’s mother Kuldeep Kaur said that six months ago, Mandeep married a girl from Prem Nagar.

The girl’s parents were against their marriage and after the marriage, they took the girl along with them on the pretext of some work and later denied to send her back.

Four months ago, when her son went to his in-laws’ house and asked to meet his wife, they assaulted him and asked him to go away.

On his complaint, the police had registered a case under section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the IPC against his in-laws.

But, even after more than three months, the police failed to arrest the guilty.

DSP Sucha Singh, however, said that during reinvestigation, a medical board was set up and found that the case registered under Section 326 against Mandeep’s in-laws was wrong. Just to build pressure on police, Mandeep was using cheap tactics, the DSP added.
