GOVT SHOULD ATTEND TO SICK MEDICAL COLLEGES

-

It was painful to see Chintpurni Medical College students protesting on roads (HT, Dec 12). Ever since this college was closed along with Gian Sagar Medical College due to financial mismanagement, Punjab has not only lost 250 MBBS seats but has also created uncertainty in the professional career of students. They have been cheated by these college managements and government has done nothing to redress their grievances. The government should have taken over the management of these colleges to ensure that the students didn’t suffer. Instead of opening new colleges, Punjab government should use the infrastructure of these financially sick colleges in the interest of medical education.

Dr BN Anand, Mohali lead by example is timely. Vicepresident M Venkaiah Naidu has rightly warned the members to let the House function smoothly or pay the price for violating the rules. He has given voice to the electorate’s disillusionment with their representatives. A day lost in Parliament costs Rs 1 crore to the taxpayers. BR Ambedkar had warned against such disruption. It has adverse impacts: the listed questions remain unanswered and important bills are passed without debate. The no- workno-pay rule should apply to our parliamentarians as well. Action must be taken against unruly members.

Usha Verma, Chandigarh ever bothered to ask what Pakistan has to do with the Gujarat elections. Even the Ayodhya temple was dragged into the canvassing though the matter is sub judice. The Election Commission stayed silent.

DS Thukral, Ambala
