Man shoots girl, blames snatchers

- Shubhomoy Sikdar

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police have arrested a man who allegedly shot at his girlfriend following an argument over her drinking habit. He then called the police and lied to them, claiming that the woman was shot at during a snatching bid.

Police said the accused, Bunty Grover, shot at the girl, Piya Malhotra, at her residence in Moti Nagar in the early hours of Monday. Bunty then rushed Piya to Safdarjung Hospital, making a call to the police control room on the way. “He claimed that four armed persons snatched a gold chain from his wife and also fired at her near the Dhaula Kuan flyover,” said police.

However, when the police cross examined him, there were several contradictions in his statement. After treatment, Piya told the police it was Bunty who had shot at her.

“There were gaps in the chain of events that was narrated to us by Bunty. He was asked where exactly the snatching-cum-shooting had taken place. We asked him to take us to a place where she was shot and he led us to a location, which was far from the spot he had claimed the incident had taken place in the PCR call,” said DCP (southwest) Milind Dumbere.

“Also asked to share details such as when and from where the couple had left or where they were returning to, he gave different answers each time,” he said.

The police also found that Bunty had a previous criminal record and he had been jailed for some time too.

“He was interrogated during which he confessed to his crime and admitted that he had shot Piya after an argument between the two. He also revealed that two of his aides, Akash Tyagi and Tushar Barua, had helped him in the crime. Akash and Tushar were also nabbed later,” said DCP Dumbere.
