Accused admit they raped 11yearold after killing her

During interrogat­ion, accused Pradeep Kumar, 28, and Sagar, 22, said they murdered victim after she resisted their rape attempt

PANIPAT: The two accused in the murder and rape of 11-year-old Dalit girl in Urlana Kalan village of Panipat district have admitted to having sex with the corpse of the victim after murdering her.

Accused Pradeep Kumar, 28, and Sagar, 22, who are residents of the same village, were produced in the district and sessions court in Panipat which remanded them in two-day police remand for further interrogat­ion.

“The accused have told the investigat­ion officer that they tried to rape the victim but when she resisted their attempt they killed her and raped her thereafter. But we are waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain the facts,” Panipat superinten­dent of police (SP) Rahul Sharma said.

On whether the police were suspecting involvemen­t of other people in the case, the SP said this cannot be stated until the police complete the investigat­ion.

The police arrested the accused few hours after the incident and booked them under Sections 302, 201-B and 34 of the Indian penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The semi-naked body of the girl was recovered near a pond on the outskirts of Urlana Kalan village on Sunday morning. Soon after getting the informatio­n, police reached the village and started investigat­ions.

“The police suspected the involvemen­t of the two of victim’s neighbours. During interrogat­ion, the duo admitted that they killed the girl with her scarf and we have also recovered the half-burnt clothes of the victim from their possession,” the SP said.

The accused claimed they kidnapped the girl around 7 pm on Saturday evening and dumped her body around 11 pm.

WOMEN HELPLINE CENTRALISE­D

CHANDIGARH: Shaken by the recent spate of crime against women in the state, the Haryana government on Monday decided to centralise its women helpline number 1091 to provide roundthe-clock immediate response to any womon in need across the state.

At present, the helpline number 1091 is running at the district level. With the centralise­d system, the calls for help would be received at a single centre to start immediate action to deal with the complaint, chief secretary DS Dhesi,and additional chief secretary (Acs-home) SS Prasad said while interactin­g with the media.
