ALIGARH: A team of Jammu & Kashmir police, led by inspector Mohammad Zahoor Wani of Kupwara district, reached Aligarh Muslim University on Monday to probe the case of research scholar Mannan Wani, who is believed to have joined the ranks of militant group Hizbul Mujahideen.

The team has collected records of the investigation conducted so far from the civil lines police and the AMU administration. Officials are likely to remain in the city for a few more days.

SP (city) Atul Srivastava told HT, “J&K police is collecting information about Mannan Wani. The literature recovered from his room is also being scrutinised.” Apart from intelligence agencies and J&K police, the UP Anti-terror Squad (ATS) and local police are also investigating the case.

In addition, a two-member committee constituted by AMU has been analysing Wani’s activities before his disappearance from the campus early this month. Another team, constituted by the proctor, is also looking into some aspects of the case.

Meanwhile, the AMU administration has tightened on-campus security. Now, anyone entering any residential hall at the varsity will first have to register their entry. The AMU administration has also instructed hall authorities to paste the photos and details of all occupants on their hostel room doors. Vehicle parking inside halls is also prohibited.

Besides, AMU proctor Prof M Mohsin Khan is making random inspections to ensure that no outsiders are staying on campus. Earlier, V-C Prof Tariq Mansoor had told all provosts and wardens that if any outsiders or anti-social elements were found in any of the residential halls, the staff and students concerned would be held responsible in the matter.
