ROHTAK: A 19-year-old student was stabbed to death by four men in the old city area on Friday night, police said. The deceased, Rocky Gulia, was a first-year BA student at Hindu College in Rohtak. He was a college-level leader of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)— the student wing associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Local ABVP leader Dinesh Shastri said Rocky was elected as the ABVP secretary for Hindu College on January 15.

The police said the incident took place on Friday night when four men cornered him on the street near his house in Sher Vihar Colony and starting thrashing him. He tried to run away and entered a local shop to seek protection. However, the accused followed him there and brutally stabbed him in full public view even as people gathered at the spot remained passive bystanders. The accused fled the spot after the incident.

Rocky’s family members came out of the house amid the chaos to find him lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) in Rohtak, where he died during treatment.

The police said the victim’s family suspects that a local boy, Shashi, was behind the murder.

Around 15 days ago, Rocky and Shashi had got into a verbal spat over dominance in college. Their friends and family had brokered a truce between them at the time, however, Rocky’s father said Shashi continued to have grudges against his son.

Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case against Shashi by name and three other unnamed persons under Sections 148 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 25 of the Arms Act.

The police said no arrest has been made so far.

Meanwhile, the family and friends of the deceased took out a protest march, carrying his body on the road. The family refused to cremate his body till the accused were arrested and brought to justice. Heavy police was deployed in the city as thousands of protesters blocked the road over the incident and manhandled senior police officials who tried to control them.
