KARNAL: Among the slew of demands of the Jat community that All India Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (AIJASS) president Yashpal Malik raised before chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar during the 6-hour meeting on Sunday, there was also a request for action against members of his own community.

Malik was among 12 people injured in a clash between rival factions during a rally of the AIJASS at Samain village of Fatehabad on August 14, 2017. At the time, Malik had accused Sarva Khap spokesperson Sube Singh Samain of engineering the attack at the instance of a BJP leader, who he did not name then.

The demands are being perceived as making the most of the ‘helplessness’ of the BJP government, ahead of its national president Amit Shah’s rally in Jat dominated Jind. “Yes, I demanded action from the chief minister against people involved in the Fatehabad attack on me,” Malik told HT on Tuesday.

He added, “We have demanded that the CBI must probe the involvement of BJP’S state president Subhash Barala in the attack as the incident took place in Samain village, which falls in Barala’s assembly segment of Tohana.”

Khattar has assured Malik that action will be taken against

people booked for attacking him during the Fatehabad rally.

‘MALIK HAS LOST GROUND IN HARYANA’ Responding to Malik’s statements, his rivals have alleged that Malik was working as an agent of the people and the entire announcement of the Jats’ tractor-trailer protest on February 15 and then its withdrawal was a ploy to suppress the voice of people.

“Malik is acting as an agent for the ruling BJP. We had already made our views known that he will eventually not hold the Jind protest. Malik just wanted to meet the chief minister to pretend that he is a big Jat leader,” said Sube Singh Samain, former spokesperson of Sarv Khap Panchayat, and Malik’s rival.

He claimed, “The CM has, thrice before, accepted all the demands that Malik has raised for Jats. Nothing has moved. The threat of a Jat protest itself was meant to mislead the people. Malik has lost ground in Haryana and cannot mobilise people now.”

Santosh Dahiya, All India Sarvkhap Mahapanchayat leader and social activist, criticised Malik for the ‘illogical demand’ for action against members of the community.

“Jats must see through this farce of meetings and protests on their behalf. The government and some leaders are misleading Jats. We spent 52 days on road, hoping to get our demands met, but nothing happened,” Dahiya added.
