NABHA: The CIA staff arrested four members of a gang, which was involved in local robberies at gunpoint, here on Saturday.

On February 15, a man was looted from a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM (automated teller machine) at gunpoint. The next day, a similar incident was reported from a Corporation Bank ATM. On February 3, a senior citizen had complained of being robbed of his motorcycle, wallet and mobile phone at gunpoint, by four men, who had followed him in a car.

Police have recovered the car and a .315 bore pistol from the accused. They said that the gang was involved in as many as seven incidents of robberies and snatching across city.

The robberies didn’t involve big amounts. Police said that they have confessed that they were planning to rob a bank ATM. The accused were taking crime lessons from videos on the internet.

The police recovered rods, a rope, black spray to cover the CCTV cameras and other tools required to uproot the ATM. The accused had allegedly marked two ATMS and were following the schedule of the loading of cash at these ATMS.

Ranjit Singh, 42, who is a farmer from Nabha’s Kaul village is said to be the leader of the gang. He came in touch with Jagjit Singh alias Rimpi, 28, who is the son of his commission agent Pargat Singh, of Ranibagh Colony here. Pargat had died a year back. The other two accused are friends of Rimpi and were identified as Ashraf Ali, 25, of Ranibagh Colony and Gursewak Singh, 28, of Mehs village.

As per the villagers, Ranjit Singh had only 1 acre land but he used to cultivate around 6 acre, by taking land on contract. The commission agents were shocked at the news of the involvement of Rimpi in the crimes. They said that he had recently sold his deceased father’s shop at Nabha Grain Market.
