ANANDPUR SAHIB : A Tarn Taran resident, Amritpal Singh, has been arrested, and around a dozen men have been booked for assaulting a head constable near the Virasat-e-khalsa museum on Wednesday afternoon.

It all started when the constable, Manpreet Kaur, deputed at the main gate of the museum, asked the accused, Amritpal, who was in the men’s queue to maintain distance from the ladies’ queue. Rupnagar SSP Raj Bachan Singh Sandhu said this infuriated Amritpal, who assaulted Manpreet after catching her by the hair.

“Head constable Balwinder Singh, who was also deputed at the spot, intervened. The accused fled, but he threatened Balwinder Singh,” the SSP added. The police used the CCTV footage to identify Amritpal as native of Chabba village in Tarn Taran and registered a case against him. The CCTV also showed him roaming near the premises of the museum.

However, Amritpal and a group of around 10 men attacked the police team that went to arrest him. Sources claimed some members of the group were dressed like Nihangs.

Head constable Balwinder Singh was assaulted with a sharp-edged weapon. After the assault, the police arrested Amritpal.

The SSP added that a case had been registered under sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty),186 (obstructing public servant), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from duty), 307 (attempt to murder), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.
