In a complaint to the police, Avtar Singh of Buttar Kalan village in Mehta said on Tuesday, as per his daily routine, around 5 pm, he went to the tubewell room of his farmhouse near Dips School to run the tubewell motor.

He said when he opened the door of the room, he found a naked woman lying unconscious and a stole lying beside her. “A rope was around her neck pointing towards death by strangulation,” he said.

He said he immediately raised an alarm and informed the village panchayat after which, the police were called.

Superintendent of police (SP) (investigation) Harpal Singh, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) (investigation) Harpreet Singh, along with other senior officers reached the spot and started investigation.

Sub-inspector (SI) of Mehta police station, Amandeep Singh, who is investigating the case, said, “The body of the woman has been sent to a mortuary at where it will be kept for 72 hours for identification.”

He said a board of doctors will conduct the postmortem and further details could be established only after that.

“Preliminary investigation however suggests that the woman was not raped,” he said.

“As of now, a case under Section 302 (punishment for murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against unidentified person(s),” the sub-inspector said.
