POLICE SAY, THE DRUGS WERE MEANT FOR DELIVERY TO A JAMMUBASED SMUGGLER

JAMMU :A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan along with his accomplice was arrested with 700 gm heroin near Sunderbani area of Rajouri district.

In the wake of an encounter between security forces and terrorists in Sunderbani area on Wednesday, police had laid a number of special checkpoints on the Sunderbani-jammu stretch of the national highway.

On one such checkpoint on the outskirts of Sunderbani town on Wednesday, police ordered an MUV car to stop for checking. However, instead of stopping, the driver accelerated the vehicle and tried to break the cordon. However, cops chased down the vehicle and caught the two men in the vehicle.

During their frisking, police found contraband — 680 gm highquality heroin — hidden in the jacket of one of the persons.

The duo was identified as Ghulam Mustafa, a BSF constable presently posted at 66 Battalion in Siliguri, West Bengal, and Mohd Azad. Both the accused hail from Dundak village in Surankote tehsil of Poonch district.

While confirming the arrests, Jammu (rural) superintendent of police Shivdeep Singh said, “At present, we do now know the origin of the contraband, however, things will get more clear during the course of the investigation.”

The SP, while confirming the arrest of the jawan, said, “His identity card established that he is a BSF constable. Moreover, we have sent a communication to his unit in Siliguiri.”

“He was earlier posted at Rajasthan and there is every possibility that he might have indulged in such a malpractice (earlier too) for money,” Singh added. It is learned that the consignment was meant for delivery to a Jammu-based smuggler.

Police after registering a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has initiated investigations.
