MEN CAN WEAR DHOTIKURTA OR PYAJAMAKURTA AND WOMEN SALWAR, KAMEEZ OR SARIS
KARNAL: Over 1,500 graduating students will be awarded degrees at the 31st convocation of Kurukshetra University on Thursday. The varsity has announced the dress code as ethnic.
Venkaiah Naidu, the vice president of India, will be the chief guest at the graduation.
According to university officials, students have been asked to dress in white — men have the option of wearing dhoti-kurta, pyajamakurta and trousers with a shirt, whereas women could wear salwar-kameez, saris and trousers with a shirt to the convocation.
This is the second consecutive year the university has made a dress code mandatory for the students, ending the concept of British-era convocation gowns.
Dr Tejinder Sharma, the public relations officer of the university, said that the decision of an ethnic dress code had been taken last year for the first time, and students had participated very enthusiastically. “This year again, the university has decided to award degrees to students in traditional attire,” he said.
The students will be provided coloured scarves to wear at the ceremony. The colour of the scarves will be different for graduate, postgraduate, PHD, and Mphil degreeawardees, he added.
Vice-chancellor Kailash Chander Sharma said besides the vice-president, Haryana governor Kaptan Singh Solanki and education minister Ram Bilas Sharma will attend the convocation.
