Fresh snow, rain in J&K, Himachal

Gulmarg and higher reaches in J&K and Lahaul and Spiti in HP recieve fresh snowfall, plains lashed by rains

JAMMU/SHIMLA: Day temperatur­es dipped in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on Friday as widespread rain lashed the plains and fresh snowfall occurred in the higher reaches.

“In the last 12 hours, fresh snowfall has occurred in Zojila Pass, Drass and other higher reaches,” the Met office said on Friday morning.

Rains have lashed most part of Jammu region with the maximum temperatur­e dropping by 9 degrees Celsius.

The current spell of rain was due to a fresh Western Disturbanc­e which has become active since wee hours.

The MET official said, the current weather system would remain prevalent till Saturday.

JAMMU-SRINAGAR HIGHWAY CLOSED

Vehicular movement on the 294-km long Jammu-srinagar national highway - the Valley’s only surface link with the rest of the country - was suspended on Friday after rainfall triggered landslides leading to blocking of the section between Ramban and Banihal.

MAY DAMAGE STANDING WHEAT CROP

Deputy director, Jammu agricultur­e department, Chander Mohan Sharma, said, “The current spell of rain has created anxiety among farmers who were planning to harvest the standing wheat crop in Jammu region.”

In Jammu, the wheat crop is harvested in the last week of April and at present, 1.2 lakh tonnes of wheat has been sown in the region.

ROHTANG GETS FRESH SNOWFALL

The tribal Lahaul and Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh on Friday received fresh bout of snow. Rohtang pass recorded 1 ft snowfall while Koksar and Marhi recorded 5 inches of snowfall each.

Other parts of the state received light to moderate rains accompanie­d by hails, thundersto­rm.

High-velocity winds swept the state capital Shimla that lowered the day temperatur­e to 21 degree Celsius.
