It is a revolutionary and necessary step...while any incident of rape or sexual molestation is unacceptable... the rape of children violates the basic tenets of humanity. CAPT AMARINDER SINGH, CM

CHANDIGARH: Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday hailed the central government ordinance paving the way for death penalty in cases of rape of children (below the age of 12) as “a revolutionary and necessary step” to check the increasing number of such incidents across the country.

In a statement here, said that capital punishment would act as a deterrent to the heinous crime.

He said that the crime of brutal rapes of minors had shaken the nation to the core in recent months. “Such criminals are a blot on the face of humanity and deserve no mercy. I am all for such exemplary punishment in cases of rape of minors.”

“While any incident of rape or sexual molestation is unacceptable in the Indian society, which has traditionally worshipped girls and women as goddesses, the rape of minor children violates the basic tenets of humanity,” the chief minister added.

He said that no sane society could tolerate such a situation, where rape of minors, including babies less than a year old, was being reported every other day. He added that minors did not even understand the brutality that they were actually being subjected to.
