Former Jaitu SHO suspended after he justifies moral policing

- Gagandeep Jassowal

FARIDKOT: SSP Nanak Singh, on Tuesday, suspended former Jaitu SHO Gurmeet Singh (shunted out in January to the police lines), whose alleged act of moral policing of three students on January 12 started a chain of events that led to the death of two policemen. The SSP’S action came after Gurmeet posted an adult video of school students on a Whatsapp group named ‘Police and Press’ in an effort to justify his act of moral policing.

HT has confirmed that the video was posted from Gurmeet’s number. He also wrote a message on the group, justifying the video. Some of the members of the group asked Gurmeet to not post such videos; his number was later deleted from the group.

When contacted, gurmeet feigned ignorance of the matter. Interestingly, he did not deny the existence of the video. Rajinder Singh, a member of Jaitu incident action committee, said, “The state police must terminate Gurmeet’s services.”

Gurmeet’s act of moral policing on January 12 in Jaitu had led to a huge row in the state. He had picked up a few students and had taken them to the police station, where he had allegedly thrashed them. Students had gone on a protest.

Baljinder Singh Sandhu, posted as DSP, Jaitu, had shot himself dead during a clash between two student unions at Punjabi University, Patiala’s regional centre located in the area, as protests had intensified.
