HISAR: A state women commission member, Suman Bedi, alleged on Tuesday that the Hansi superintendent of police (SP) is trying to protect five police personnel, who allegedly thrashed a 70-year-old woman in a closed-door room at Hansi city police station on April 20. “The police have not produced a proper status report of the case so far,” said Bedi, during a press conference at the PWD rest house in Hisar on Tuesday.

The victim is admitted at the Hisar civil hospital, she said, adding, “I came to know about the incident on Monday evening during my visit to Sirsa. The elderly victim, Tara Devi, belongs to the Sahnsi community, and was at Hansi market to buy food for her pets, when a woman and a man took her to a nearby police station on charges of theft.”

She further said, “Firstly, there was no woman cop present at the station and secondly, nothing was recovered from Devi when frisked. When I went to the hospital, the victim told me that five policemen thrashed her black and blue. I saw her bruises and they too tell a horror story.”

The women commission member said that after the assault, Devi was let go after which, she took help from someone and called her son, who took her to the civil hospital. “I asked SP Pratiksha Godara and deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Narender Kadian about the status-report, but they have not sent me anything so far, in a bid to save their colleagues. The victim told me that she can identify three accused if brought in front of her,” Suman Bedi said.

When contacted, SP Godara said, “DSP Narender Kadian is investigating the matter. I have ordered and sent two policepersons at police lines and a departmental inquiry has been ordered. Action against police will be ensured after getting the inquiry’s report.”

A Hansi police spokesperson said, “The SP has sent accused ASI Ramesh Kumar and head constable Satnam to police lines.”

Meanwhile, Bedi said that she will write letters to the National Women Commission about the matter, along with the President and Prime Minister and chief minister regarding the behavior of the SP. Bedi demanded registration of an FIR against the accused policemen.
