ROHTAK : A junior national gold medallist boxer, along with his four accomplices, was arrested by the Rohtak Police on Friday for the murder of a 23-year-old law student Virender Singh on Wednesday night.

Virender, son of a policeman, was shot dead on his birthday near Sheila bypass when he was going home after buying some eatables.

Based on Virender’s cousin’s version, the police booked five people on charges of murder. They have been identified as Vijay Boxer, 22 (a BA graduate); Rahul Rathaur, 21, (MSC aspirant); Deepak Kumar, 20 (a BSC second year student); Aman Kumar, 18, (Class 12 student) and Vicky Boxer, 26, a junior national gold medallist boxer, who joined a gang in 2011.

The police said deceased Virender and accused Deepak had a fight on April 23. Their respective friends had arranged for a meeting to call truce on April 25, but the duo fought again on that day. On Deepak’s complaint, Virender and his friends were booked under Sections 323 (voluntary causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

“The investigation revealed that the accused kept a grudge against Virender and called in his associates to kill him,” inspector Manoj Verma said.

“On the day of the incident, the five accused gathered at Vicky Boxer’s house and planned Virender’s murder. They searched him across the city, but could not find him. While they were going back home, they found Virender on the way and shot him dead,” Verma said.

The police said the five will be produced in court on Saturday and their remand will be sought to recover the murder weapon and find out who among them fired the shot that hit Virender in his chest and killed him.

A TREND

In the past few years, Haryana has seen over a dozen cases where sportspersons having earned accolades turned towards the world of crime. A police officer said Vicky Boxer, who also won two gold and two silver medals in state-level championships, joined the world of crime in 2011 when he along with his friend killed a Jind man over a minor rivalry.

Post the murder, Vicky joined Rajesh Sarkari gang. “When Sarkari’s mother got ill and was admitted to PGIMS in Rohtak, Vicky donated his blood for her to earn Sarkari’s trust,” the police officer said. Since then, there has been no looking back for Vicky, who has eight cases of murder and attempt to murder registered against him.

Last year, Vicky had used an ambulance to kill a rival, who despite facing five bullets, had survived Vicky’s attack.
