SOPORE FIRING: MAN KILLED, WIFE INJURED

- Ashiq Hussain

SRINAGAR : A man was killed and his wife was critically injured in a firing by suspected militants in north Kashmir’s Sopore on Friday evening.

Police said militants fired upon Mohammad Ashraf Mir, 35, at Harwan area of Sopore in Baramulla district. “Both Mir and his wife were critically injured in the incident,” police said. Mir later succumbed to his injuries.

A police party rushed to the spot to collect further details.

Sopore superintendent of police (SP) Javaid Iqbal said militants barged into Mir’s home and opened fire. “He was hit by five bullets and died before reaching the hospital in Sopore. His wife has injuries in both her legs and has been referred to Srinagar,” he said.

The motive of killing him is not clear yet, he said.

SP said that the man used to work as a driver and had a business of fruits.

He said they suspect the involvement of Lashkar-etaiba militants including some foreigners.

Few hours earlier, suspected militants lobbed a grenade which exploded outside a police station in Pulwama, south Kashmir. However, no casualty was reported. Some aerial shots were fired by a policeman guarding the police station after the explosion.

The killing comes four days after bullet riddled dead bodies of three youth were found in Baramulla old town. Police had suspected militants of Lashkare-taiba behind the act. However, separatists had condemned the killing of the three civilians on Monday night and said any killings on the grounds of political or party affiliations was inhuman. The cricket administratorturned-parliamentarian said suggestions given by Sachin in the Parliament to promote sports were being implemented and Khel Mahakumbh was on the lines of those recommendation.
