AMBALA: A Congress leader allegedly shot dead a person from a point-blank range in broad daylight in the busy Thopkhana Bazaar in Ambala Cantonment on Sunday morning.

The deceased, Sandeep Goyal, 40, a BJP worker, is survived by his wife, son and a daughter.

Gunshots were heard soon after Goel left his house in the morning, a relative of the deceased said in the complaint. When the relative rushed out, he found Goel lying on the road, the complaint said. It added that Goel had been receiving threats from a resident of his locality for the past few months.

Goel was rushed to the civil hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Police have registered a case under Section 302 (murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Congress leader Vijay Sharma, his brothers Cantonment Board (CB) member Virender Gandhi, Manoj Sharma, Jitender Sharma, son Pankaj, drive Sonu, nephews Rajat and Chetan.

Vijay and his nephew Rajat were arrested later in the day and hunt was on to nab the other accused, said the police.

Shops in the Thopkhana Bazaar remained closed in protest against the murder.

Both Goyal and Sharma lived in the same area. Police suspect an old rivalry to be the reason behind the murder.

At 9.30am when the victim was standing in front of his house, Sharma took out his licensed pistol and pointed towards him after heated arguments. Eyewitness said Goyal ran for cover and fell down after stumbling upon a motorcycle. Sharma fired three shots at Goel, killing him on the spot.

Locals said Goel had filed a child molestation complaint against the Congress leader.

Condemning the incident, Haryana Health minister Anil Vij said that the Congress leaders have no regard for law.
