AIJASS president threatens to oppose BJP in 2019 LS polls

- Neeraj Mohan

KARNAL: A day after the BJP government in Haryana assured the Punjab and Haryana high court that it will not pursue withdrawal of 407 cases registered during the pro-quota violence of February 2016, All India Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (AIJASS) national president Yashpal Malik on Wednesday threatened to oppose the BJP in the coming Lok Sabha elections, saying the party has betrayed the community.

“Once again the BJP government has betrayed the members of Jat community,” Malik told Hindustan Times over phone.

He said that ahead of BJP president Amit Shah’s Jind rally in February this year, the Haryana government had promised that it will withdraw cases registered during the Jat agitation, but now it has turned back from its promise.

He said, “Jats (under AIJASS) will oppose the BJP in the coming Lok Sabha elections to prevent it from retaining power. This will have a direct impact on about 70 parliamentary seats in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.”

Malik said they are also opposing the BJP in the coming bypoll for the Kairana Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh.

further course of action.

Asked if the Jat body will start fresh protests if the cases were not withdrawn, he said, “This will be decided in the June 2 meeting, but we will explore other alternatives as well.”

AIJASS Haryana vice-president Balwan Kotra said the Manohar Lal Khattar government registered false cases against Jat youths. Despite making repeated promises to withdraw these cases, it has now refused to do so, he added.

Notably, Haryana advocate general BR Mahajan on Tuesday gave an undertaking in the high court that the state will not pursue the proposed withdrawal of 407 of the 2,105 cases registered in 21 districts till July 11, the next date of hearing in the case.
