Hry farmers gearing up for 10-day protest from June 1

KARNAL : In a bid to make their 10-day ‘Kisan Avkash’ from June 1 successful, farmer leaders in Haryana are holding meetings and appealing growers to join the nationwide protest to press for their demands, including a complete farm loan waiver and implementation of the Swaminathan commission report.

During the stir, being organised under the banner of Rashtriya Kisan Mahasangh (RKM), farmers will not sell milk, vegetables and foodgrains in the markets and will also not buy anything, including fuel, for 10 days. They will also sit on dharnas in their respective villages.

The decision was taken after the farmers failed to ensure a big gathering at their March 23 protest in Delhi.

“The decision was taken unanimously in a meeting of several farmer unions in Delhi around two months ago. Farmers are left with no other option but to boycott the markets from June 1 to 10 to press for their demands,” said Haryana Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) president Gurnam Singh Chaduni, who is among the seven members of the RKM.

He said in order to make the protest successful, farmer union leaders are appealing to farmers not to buy or sell anything for 10 days and join the protest.

He added that about 110 farmer

organisations in various states of the country will join the nationwide protest. “The farmers should help the dairy farmers and vegetable growers by buying their milk and vegetables as they will not sell these items in the market,” he added.

Farmer leaders are holding meetings at block and district level in the entire state and appealing them to make the strike successful. They are also uploading video messages of these meetings on the social media to mobilise the farmers for the protest.

A farmer leader, who does not want to be named, said thousands of farmers associated with seven farmer unions of the state are likely to join the protest.

He said the protest is likely to get a good response in Yamunaganar, Kurukshetra, Hisar, Sonepat, Jind and Karnal districts as Chaduni has a strong hold in these districts.

He said the farmers are agitated over the police action against them at Radaur on March 23, in which 35 farmers were detained and around 150 booked under various sections of the IPC.
