SRINAGAR: The army on Friday ordered a court of inquiry against Major Nitin Leetul Gogoi, who was detained by police on Wednesday following an altercation at a hotel in Srinagar.

The major had booked a room for himself in the hotel where a woman was scheduled to come and meet him.

The decision to order a court of inquiry came shortly after army chief Gen Bipin Rawat said in Pahalgam that exemplary punishment would be given to Gogoi if he was found guilty.

Major Gogoi shot to fame last year for allegedly tying a civilian to an army vehicle as a human shield against a stone peltingmob in Srinagar.

Defence spokesperson Rajesh Kalia said the inquiry will be carried out by a senior officer.

Jammu and Kashmir Police are already conducting an investigation into the May 23 incident when the major, along with his driver and the woman from Budgam, were handed over to the police.

Gen Rawat said: “Whosoever it is, of what rank, if anybody does any wrong and it comes to our notice of the army, strict action will be taken against him.”

“If Major Gogoi has done anything wrong, I assure you that soon he will be punished and I will give such punishment that it will set an example,” Gen Rawat told the reporters in south Kashmir.

The army chief, who is on a two-day visit to Kashmir, on Friday visited south Kashmir to review the situation with formation commanders, especially after the unilateral ceasefire was announced in the Valley.
