8 killed, 13 injured in mishaps
Truck and ‘peter rehra’ collide in Tarn Taran, leaving four dead, nine injured; three killed in Patiala, including two in carsuv crash; 1 dead, four hurt in Rupnagar
TARN TARAN/PATIALA/RUPNAGAR: Eight persons were killed and 13 were injured in road accidents in Tarn Taran, Patiala and Rupnagar districts in the last 24 hours.
Four persons died and nine got injured after a head-on collision between a truck and a ‘peter rehra’ (a locally modified cart) near Sangwan village on the Patti-harike road in Tarn Taran district on Monday morning.
Police said the four who died were travelling in the ‘peter rehra’.
The collision was so strong that three of them died on the spot. They were identified as Harpreet Singh (30) of Patti, Raja (25) of Thakarpura village and Kali (32) of Kairon village in the district. Gurdev Singh (33) of Patti succumbed to his injuries at the Patti civil hospital.
The truck cleaner (one of the injured) got trapped inside the vehicle for a few hours and was rescued after breaking its body with an earthmover. Seven of the injured were referred to the Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar. The victims’ bodies were handed over to their families after post-mortem.
The injured were identified as the Bachittar Singh (truck cleaner) of Dyalpura villag, Sukhwinder Singh, Dilbagh Singh (peter rehra driver) and Sunny (all three of Kairon village); Lal Singh of Manehala village; Lakhwinder Singh, Ramesh Kumar, Gurjant Singh and Harchand Singh of Patti. The police said the accident took place around 5.30 am when the truck (PB-46-K-9642) loaded with gypsum was going from Patti to Harike while the ‘peter rehra’ was on its way back from Nakodar.
A case under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against truck driver Shamsher Singh of Dyalpura village. The driver is absconding.
Plying a ‘peter rehra’, also known as ‘gharooka’, is illegal.
PATIALA COLLISION
In Patiala, three persons were killed in two accidents on Sunday evening. In one of the incidents, two persons died on the spot after head-on collision between a car and an SUV near Gunia Majra village on the Patiala-sirhind road. The deceased have been identified as Meera Devi (54) of Una in Himachal Pradesh and Balwinder Singh (35) of Patiala.
Meera and her husband Dharam Singh were coming to Patiala to attend a gathering, while deceased Balwinder, who was driving Mahindra Bolero, was going with his family to Sirhind. Both the vehicles were completely damaged in the incident.
In another incident, 20-yearold was killed when a truck rammed into his two-wheeler near Rauni village on the Patiala-nabha road. The victim was identified as Shubham Behl of Majithia Enclave Colony.
Police said he was crushed by a bus after he fell on the ground.
He was rushed to Rajindera Hospital, Patiala, where he succumbed to his injuries. The police have registered case against unidentified drivers of the truck and bus.
BUS RAMS INTO CAR IN RUPNAGAR
In Rupnagar’s Nurpur Bedi, one person was killed and four were injured when a state-owned bus collided with a car near Kalwan village on Nurpur Bedigarhshanker road on Monday afternoon.
The accident took place around 1pm.
The injured were identified as Sher Singh, Happy, Kaku, Mehar Singh of Nangal Chaura village in Chabbewal of Hoshiarpur district and bus passenger Usha Devi in Anandpur Sahib.
They were rushed to Bhai Jaita ji civil hospital Anandpur Sahib and civil hospital Singhpura from where three of them were referred to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education And Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh.
Mehar Singh (70) succumbed to his injuries there.
The car occupants were returning after immersing the ashes of their relative in the Sutlej at Gurdwara Patalpuri Sahib in Kiratpur Sahib.
The police have registered a case of rash driving and causing death by negligence against the bus driver, who is absconding.
