JAMMU: Vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday asked Pakistan to give up its policy of supporting, aiding and abetting terror from its soil. He also termed peace a prerequisite for progress.

Addressing scientists, students and staff here at the Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, he said, “We must be willing to have a dialogue with Pakistan but it must give up policy of supporting, aiding, abetting and training terror. Zero tolerance on the matters of national security and unity,” he said.

He asserted, “Pakistan must honour the commitment of not allowing its territory to be used for training terror.”

Underlining the indispensability of peace, he said if there was tension at border, attention could not be paid towards development activities.

“Scientific advancements illuminate our understanding of the universe, whereas the religion provides answers to the unexplored universe,” he said.

Saying that the process of questioning and seeking solutions lies at the heart of research, Naidu said human progress was not possible without the quest for deeper understanding of the world around.

He further said the children and young adults must be encouraged to ask questions and search for answers. “Quality of research is an important indicator of the quality of an educational system and it also determines the pace of a country’s development,” he said. Naidu also asked the gathering to give more attention on diabetes and diseases like malaria, chikungunya and dengue so that a large number of people get benefited from their research on drug discovery.

Governor NN Vohra, Union minister Jitendra Singh, deputy CM Kavinder Gupta and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
