Drive in the wrong lane and lose your licence

RUDRAPUR: Those driving their vehicles in the wrong lane in Udham Singh Nagar will lose their license, if directions passed by district magistrate Dr Neeraj Khairwal are implemented.

Khairwal has directed officials to immediately cancel the driving licenses of those found guilty of driving on the wrong side of the road.

He also directed “not to show any mercy or entertain any excuse” from such people.

“Jab bhi daure per hota hu to raste me wrong side driving karne walo ko dekh ker itna gussa aata hai ki sochta hu car rukwa ker aise logo ko do thappad laga dun.

(Whenever I see people driving in the wrong lane, I feel like stopping them and slapping them),” said Khairwal said.

“Why should an innocent person driving in the right lane become victim of a person driving on the wrong side,” Khairwal asked. Udham Singh Nagar has recorded more than 125 deaths in road accidents since January 1 this year. The newly constructed national highway in the district has paved way for smooth flow of traffic in the district.

The NH, however, has also witnessed a rise in accidents mostly due to over speeding, over loading, drink driving, and driving in the wrong lane. Lack of signboards indicating accident-prone zones have also been blamed for rise in accidents.

Often, to save a few minutes, and some fuel, drivers of commercial vehicles take to the wrong side of the road to reach the nearest cut for crossing the lanes. Khairwal instructed the officials to install signboards highlighting U-turns, curves and cuts on the road.

Sadanand Date, senior superintendent of police, US Nagar, said, “We regularly conduct checking and take action against over speeding and over loaded vehicles.
