SAD councillor held for abetting woman’s suicide in Bathinda

BATHINDA::POLICE have arrested a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) councillor in Bathinda for allegedly abetting the suicide of a woman who had ended her life in February this year.

On the complaint of Tarloch Singh, also an Akali councillor in the city, the police arrested Rajinder Singh Sidhu after registerin­g a case under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The case was registered after an inquiry into an audio clip having a conversati­on the councillor had with the victim Jasmine Kaur (22) a resident of Jodhour Romana village. In the audio clip, Sidhu allegedly has used abusive language against Kaur.

A Bathinda court on Tuesday sent Sidhu in judicial custody.

The victim, whose parents live in Guru Nanak Pura Mohalla, was found in a park after having consumed poison on February 26. She died in hospital. The police had conducted inquest proceeding­s into the incident.

The audio clip surfaced later and the police conducted an inquiry. Councillor Tarloch Singh alleged that the victim, who was the daughter of his neighbour, consumed poison as Sidhu harassed her. Deputy superinten­dent of police (DSP) Gurpreet Singh said the police will probe the matter further.

TEACHER HELD FOR SEXUALLY HARASSING CLASS-5 GIRL

In another case, police arrested a teacher at a government elementary school in Lehra Bega for allegedly sexually harassing a Class-5 girl.

On a complaint by a relative of the girl, police arrested Varinder Kumar by registerin­g a case under section 354B (use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe) of IPC, besides POCSO Act. The girl lives with her maternal grandparen­ts. The teacher allegedly harassed her in the school on Monday.
