Robbers take away ₹5 lakh from power station in Amritsar
COMES A MONTH AFTER 3 ARMED MEN TOOK AWAY GOLD WORTH ₹33 LAKH FROM A SHOP AFTER OPENING FIRE AT A WORKER
AMRITSAR: Two bike-borne armed men, with their covered faces, looted around ~5 lakh from Kukran Wala power substation, 17 km from the district headquarters, on Monday afternoon. The robbers also fired some shots in the air.
The loot comes a month after three armed men had taken away gold worth ₹33 lakh from a goldsmith’s shop after opening fire at a worker at Guru Bazar here.
The latest incident took place at 2:30pm. The power sub-station also houses a police post. Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) cashier Lakhwinder Singh said: “I was counting cash when two men, in their 20s, who had covered their faces covered, opened fire outside my office and barged in. They put a gun to my head and took away Rs 4,86,603.”
PSPCL sub-division officer (SDO) Avtar Singh, whose office is also in the complex, said as soon as he heard a gunshot, rushed out. “I saw two armed men coming out of the cashier’s office. I tried to stop them but one of them opened fire at me. I had a narrow escape,” he said.
He alleged that the cops present at the post did not do anything to stop the robbers. “They (cops) were mute spectators, as a result the robbers could easily escape after committing the crime,” said the SDO.
Later, Majitha deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Hardev Singh Boparai and station house officer (SHO) of Rajasansi Sukhjinder Singh reached the spot and started investigation.
The SHO said two policemen tried to chase the robbers who sped away on a motorbike. “However, the cops’ bike broke down near Jagdev Kalan village. When policemen requested some passers-by to give their bikes to chase the robbers, no one agreed to it,” said the SHO.
“We are examining the footage of the closed circuit televisions (CCTV) cameras in the area. A case will be registered on the complaint of the PSPCL employees,” he added.
