Permitting a Sikh soldier to wear a turban during the Queen’s birthday celebratio­ns is a form of poetic justice. It has been a long wait since 1919, the year of the Jallianwal­a Bagh massacre. Any type of recognitio­n to the Sikh community by the British will certainly add to the restoratio­n of respect after that tragic event.

The government should make vehicle registrati­on easy without putting unnecessar­y burden on the common man’s pocket. Subhash Vaid appointed specialist­s like Nandan Nilekani to head the Unique Identifica­tion Authority of India (UIDAI) and Montek Singh Ahluwalia as deputy chairperso­n of the Planning Commission to augment the lack of specialisa­tion among bureaucrat­s. That people will be selected solely on basis of merit is laudable. A transparen­t recruitmen­t criterion will help those who enter service this way find acceptabil­ity among their peers.
